Echoes of Joni

Duration Approx. 40 minutes
Echoes of Joni was first inspired by the open guitar tunings in Joni Mitchell’s music and the distinctive sound of The Hissing of Summer Lawns, Hejira and Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter.
The work unfolds as a continuous sequence of nine connected landscapes. The amplified ensemble and electronics blur into one another, while fragments of recognisable material appear briefly before disappearing back into the texture, creating the feeling of moving through a constantly shifting landscape, like a fever dream.
Echoes of Joni is an homage to Joni Mitchell’s music, but it doesn’t attempt to imitate her style. Instead, it draws on the harmonic language and atmosphere of these recordings, filtering them through my own compositional voice.
