IAM24
IAM24 is the soundtrack to a dance work choreographed by Treacle Holasz in 2013. The project explored questions of identity and cultural heritage, with each of the four collaborators drawing on their own personal histories.
For my contribution, I looked to my own English heritage, drawing on songs from Early Lately, an album by my father’s cousin and folk singer, Lyn Geddes. Small fragments of those recordings were stretched, layered and transformed into shimmering textures that gradually reveal traces of the original material.
I rediscovered these recordings on an old laptop more than a decade later. Listening back, I was surprised by how well the music had aged, and it seemed like the right time to finally release it.
Echoes of Joni
Echoes of Joni marks an important turning point in my work. It brought together ideas that had been developing over several years and became the first large-scale work to fully realise my approach to studio composition. The music was built in the studio first and only later became a score for live performance.
Although the title points towards Joni Mitchell, the album isn’t an attempt to imitate her music. Instead, it tries to capture something of its spirit within my own musical aesthetic. Her harmonic language provided one of the starting points, but the piece gradually developed its own identity, moving through a series of connected musical landscapes where the boundaries between acoustic instruments, electronics and recorded sound become increasingly blurred.
